The little town too big for one state
Delmar was founded in 1859 where the Delaware and Maryland railroad charters met — the name is a portmanteau of the two states. It is two separate municipalities: Delmar, Sussex County, Delaware and Delmar, Wicomico County, Maryland, together around 4,600 people. They share a sewer system from 1927 and consolidated schools from 1949.
For a business, that history is a present-day problem. Google treats Delaware and Maryland as different places, and a Delmar business optimised for only one of them is invisible to a customer standing a few hundred feet away in the other.
One town, two sets of search results
Salisbury is six or seven miles south, and Delmar sits inside its metro area — so the practical market is larger than the town, and it crosses the line constantly. Getting the geography right in your listings and on the site is not a technicality here; it is most of the local SEO job.
