Kennett Square calls itself the Mushroom Capital of the World, and the numbers back it up: Chester County grows roughly half of the U.S. mushroom crop, and Pennsylvania as a whole grows more than two-thirds. Longwood Gardens carries a Kennett Square address but is in East Marlborough Township, and the Constellation campus on Exelon Way is likewise outside the borough, along US 1. For a business owner the town has two stories running at once. It is dense and walkable — the historic district holds 507 contributing buildings, the Kennett Collaborative fills the calendar with the farmers market, Brewfest and holiday programs, and the Mushroom Festival marked its 40th year in September 2025 — so downtown foot traffic is real. It is also changing fast: Kennett Pointe and The Flats at Kennett alone added 228 apartments, the $22 million Kennett Library & Resource Center opened in August 2023, and borough council voted in August 2026 to advertise mixed-use zoning for the 22-acre former NVF plant. An industry under pressure, a downtown that is not
The mushroom business is not what it was. U.S. production fell from 811 million pounds in 2015 to 631 million in 2025, and at least five Chester County farms have closed since 2022; South Mill Champs, based in Kennett Square with around 400 direct Chester County employees, is among those still standing.
