Georgetown is where Sussex County's government and courts sit, arranged radially around The Circle. It is also, as of the 2020 census, 51.4% Hispanic or Latino, with Guatemalan the largest single ancestry at 33.3% — a community that grew up around the poultry industry, including the Perdue Farms processing plant here.
That makes Georgetown the one town in our area where the language question is not theoretical. A business here may be leaving a meaningful share of its market unaddressed simply because its website only speaks English.
Government, poultry and a genuinely bilingual customer base
Three economies overlap here and none of them are seasonal. County government and the courts run year-round, and bring with them legal, bail and professional services. Sussex Correctional Institution and the Delaware Coastal Business Park add steady employment. And poultry processing underpins a great deal of the rest.
Georgetown also has Return Day — held biennially two days after each election, with horse-drawn carriages around The Circle and a literal burying of the hatchet. There is not another town in the country with that, and almost nobody uses it.
