A community without a town hall
Lincoln is a census-designated place rather than a municipality, one of just two in the county alongside Long Neck. The 2020 tally recorded 894 people across 2.84 square miles, roughly 317 to the square mile, on US 113 between Milford to the north and Ellendale to the south. Col. Abel Stokes Small laid it out in 1865 as Lincoln City in anticipation of the railroad; the Lincoln Herald began printing that October, a horse racing track was operating by 1891, and fires in 1889 and 1897 set the place back.
Having no town government matters more than it sounds. There is no council, no comprehensive plan, no annexation record and no municipal website, so remarkably little gets published about Lincoln for anybody — search engines included — to draw on. A business here either fills that vacuum itself or gets quietly absorbed into Milford's results.
Highway frontage and a plan nobody here voted on
The documented commercial inventory is thin, and it is worth stating honestly: an excavating company and an auto salvage yard hold the state air permits, and that is the whole list. The live issue is the road itself. DelDOT's long-running plan to turn US 113 into a limited-access highway with grade-separated overpasses would begin at the northern end near Staytonville and Fleatown Road, and the proposal has been described as capable of dividing this community and cutting neighbors off from one another. Milford, being incorporated, negotiated its way out of the limited-access treatment; Lincoln has no comparable body to argue on its behalf, while Milford's annexation reach keeps growing. Any business relying on drivers turning off the highway should be planning for the day that turn is gone.
