Serving Pike Creek

One name, two census boundaries

There is a naming problem here that is worth clearing up before anything else. The census recognizes two adjacent places — Pike Creek at 7,808 residents and Pike Creek Valley at 11,692 — and most people use the first name for the whole area. This page treats them together, because trade does too: roughly 19,500 people either side of Limestone Road who shop, hire and search in exactly the same places.

What the area does not have is an employer. Neither boundary contains an employer of any size — nothing industrial, nothing corporate, no medical center, no named large business — and retail runs to neighborhood strip centers on Route 7 with Kirkwood Highway clipping the southern edge. White Clay Creek State Park, Middle Run Natural Area and Carousel Park take up a good share of the ground. CNN/Money ranked Pike Creek first on its 2007 list of the hundred best American places to live, still the only time a Delaware community topped it.

The Pike Creek market

A market that grows by taking share

The household figures explain the buying. Median income sat near $106,313 in 2011, median home value at $324,403, poverty around 1.6 percent — money that goes on the house and the children. The defining civic fight of the last fifteen years was over land: the Three Little Bakers golf club operated from 1971 until 2010, and a 2021 Delaware Supreme Court ruling capped redevelopment of the site at roughly 60 homes rather than the 224 first proposed.

For a local business the consequence is that very little is being added. No new subdivision is about to flood you with customers and there is no employer to sell into, so any growth has to come out of a competitor. That puts a hard premium on whatever decides close calls: reviews, how fast you answer, whether your pricing is legible, and whether the site works properly on a phone held in a driveway.

Questions from Pike Creek

What Pike Creek businesses usually ask us

Should our pages say Pike Creek or Pike Creek Valley?

Lead with Pike Creek, since that is what people actually type, and let Pike Creek Valley appear naturally where it belongs. Writing two pages to match two census boundaries produces near-identical content and helps nobody.

We have no main street. Where do customers really find us?

On a phone, from home, usually right after asking a neighbor. With no commercial district doing the advertising on your behalf, your listing, your reviews and your website are the storefront.

The golf course case is settled. Do 60 new homes change anything?

Marginally. Sixty households is a decent stretch of work for a mover, a painter or a landscaper and very little for anyone else. Be visible for that specific window; do not reorganize a business around it.

Nearly everyone here works in Newark or Wilmington. Advertise there too?

Sometimes, but deliberately. Neighbors buy home services close to home, so if you also want commercial work it needs its own pages aimed at those towns rather than one page trying to cover the county.

We also work with businesses in Hockessin, Newark, Elsmere, Wilmington and across New Castle County along the Limestone Road corridor. Not in the neighborhood? We build and support websites for clients all over the country — the process works just as well over a phone call.
